Now that all the posts are in place and the concrete has cured enough for you to continue the project it is time for you to put up the fence stringers. These horizontal connection points between the posts are what you will mount the fence boards onto. You should use a minimum of two stringers for any size fence and as many as required to make sure that you have no more than a 24 inch gap between stringers. The method of attaching fence boards that you use will depend completely on the design and style of fence that you have chosen to build. Consider renting or using a pneumatic nail gun for the process of putting up the fence boards. Using screws is ideal however somewhat overkill for most fence projects. Using a regular hammer and nails causes a fair bit of trauma to the new fence and still only somewhat cured concrete fence posts. Using a nail gun for putting up the fence boards can be a huge timesaver.
A general rule of thumb to estimate the cost of many home improvement projects is to calculate the materials cost and double it to determine the total project cost when using a contractor. For most fence projects this method will overestimate the project cost by 10-20% so it can be used as a conservative approximation. Installing a wood privacy fence is a significant project due to the amount of work, but not too difficult for the typical homeowner and the cost savings can be substantial. The American Fence Association estimates the average cost of privacy fence installation at approximately $17 to $24 per linear foot for a licensed, bonded, and insured contractor (2013 figures). This estimate doesn't include sales tax or permit/inspection fees that may apply in your locality.
Adding a fence to your home or upgrading an existing fence offer more value than what is visually seen. Your needs will determine exactly what fence you choose for your backyard. My girlfriend for example added a chain link fence to the border of her backyard. At first the fence was installed as a barrier for the dog. Years later they installed an in-ground pool and decided that a more secure fence was needed to secure the pool area. They installed a wrought iron fence about five feet tall with a locking gate. This fence provides safety keeping the pool area secure for when an adult is not outside. The chain link fence keeps people inside the space and the wrought iron fence keeps children and pets out of the pool. Your fence must meet your family's needs. A fence will only add values to your home and is an upgrade that will pay for itself.
