Vinyl fence, aluminum fence and wrought iron fencing is low maintenance. Wood fence can often require more effort to maintain. This is something else to consider on top of the installation. Make certain you know exactly what you are getting for your buck. Above all it is important to remind yourself that no matter the expense a fence will improve the value of your home and become the best neighbor you could ever have for privacy and a feeling of personal space within your landscape.
Another thing to consider in your fence planning is the measurements. Careful measurement is a necessity if you want to purchase the proper quantity of materials and avoid problems during installation. It is always important to check your property's boundary lines when measuring for fence construction. You do not want to have to make your neighbor upset and have to remove a just installed fence because you did not stay within your property boundaries. Another important item to check during fence measurement and before fence construction is your local ordinances and homeowners association rules. You need to make sure that the fence you build meets all required specifications.
Without stain a cedar fence will turn gray over time. If it is desired to stain the wood the stain can be applied before or after the pickets are attached. Be sure to use a high quality, heavy-bodied, oil based stain. The first application is the most important. To apply the stain do not use a garden sprayer or a roller as the stain will only rest on the surface of the wood. This will result in a fence that needs to be re-stained year after year. It is better to use a short (2 inches or less) thick-bristled brush. Using aggressive brush strokes work the stain into the wood. This does take a little more labor the first time. The brush will insure that the stain penetrates into the cells of the wood. When done properly the first year the fence will not need to be re-stained for up to five years. When the fence needs to be re-stained use a common garden sprayer.
