Before you start building your fence you need to lay out the area properly to get a good idea for where the fence is going to sit in proportion to the house and surrounding area.It can be helpful to run string lines at the elevation that the fence will be at in terms of its finished height. You can run these string lines both at the top and at the bottom of the finished height of the fence.
If your fence is being used to enclose a pool areas you will want to check into that specifically. Even if you do not have any restrictions with a yard fence a fence surrounding a pool is completely different and should be asked about specifically. Installing a pool fence that does not meet your local or state laws can be costly if it has to be removed and a new one reinstalled all because the wrong material was used to enclose the pool.
Usually, if a residential fence is made of metal, you can bet it's probably a Chain Link style. With chain link fencing, the posts, brackets and the actual chain links are all galvanized metal to retard rusting. Many people wouldn't consider chain link outside of an urban setting, but others find it to be an inexpensive option per foot. In the past decade, there's been a trend to coat the chain link and the posts with colored vinyl to weatherproof it. This not only extends it's already long life expectancy but it also can dramatically improve it's appearance. A Chain link fence requires little routine maintenance.
Where I live we are not under any restriction to the type of fence material we can use, height of fencing, spacing or colors that are acceptable. We are found we are restriction free and may have decorative aluminum, wood, picket or chain link fence. Whatever our hearts desire we can install. I have heard of many neighborhoods allowing wood fencing however not all styles. Picket and split rail wood fences may be allowed but privacy fence not permitted due to a restriction on height.
For most, the choice is fairly easy already, but just in case it isn't, let's take a look at the pros and cons of each before we figure out if you need a vinyl fence or aluminum fence.
